The application is designed to be used offline, so user names and passwords are stored in the phone so that a user can login even when she doesn’t have a cell phone signal.

However, the first time you login, the phone has no knowledge of the users on the server. So the first time you login, only the first time, the login screen will accept any username and password – these are later checked once you have confirmed the server details on the next screen.

This is only presented to the user on the first login, afterwards the Connection Settings are available through the Settings menu.

You can confirm or edit the server settings.

For more information, see the Settings section.

Every time the application needs to access the internet, the user will be asked to confirm whether to allow the connection. This is something the phone does, not the application and we cannot change. Experience may vary from phone to phone.

1. You must click yes to continue

This is the screen that the user will now see each time they log in

If you enter the wrong username or password, you will see an Access denied message. Pressing ok will return you to the login page you will then have the opportunity to enter a correct username and password.

If you enter the wrong server address, you will see an error message. You will then be returned to the login screen, and then once again to the connection settings screen.

Note: In the unlikely even that you enter a valid openXdata server address, but not the correct openXdata server address then the application will think that you have an incorrect username and password and you will be taken back to the username and password screen but will not be shown the Connection Settings screen again and you will not be able to login. In this case you will need to delete the app from your phone and reinstall.

This blank screen will contain a list of all of the groups of questions you have added, as you add them. For now, it is empty.

1. Click New

Note that as no information is added only "Cancel" is available as an option

After entering data for some or all of the questions, the OK option has appeared on the Right Option

Click OK

You now have a list of the data you entered. From here you can use the "Menu" button to add new data, delete a data set you’ve added or return to the main form.

In the above shot I have entered three seperate groups of answers to the repeat question.

You can also go up and down this list and select a row, to return and edit it.

Note there is currently a ticket, to change the display on the main form from this to simply a count of the number of groups of repeat data entered.

You need:

• Bluetooth on your phone
• Bluetooth on a computer – built in or through a bluetooth dongle

The general process is:

• Pair your computer and your phone
• In you computer find the "Send files" function and send the .jar file to the phone
• Accept the file transfer on your phone

After the transfer, look for the application on your phone – it will often be under Games

You need:

• Your phone to have an SD card slot
• An SD card that fits in your phone – usually microSD (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital)
• Usually some kind of adaptor so you can use the microSD card like a USB stick on your computer

The general process is:

• Plug the microSD card into your computer so it appears as an external drive, like a USB stick
• Copy the .jar file onto the SD card
• Eject from your computer
• Put your SD card into your phone
• Find the app on your phone

The mForms app will usually run from the SD card, but you also should be able to copy it onto your phone if you want to use the SD card for other file transfers.

You need:

• A phone with a data cable

The general process is:

• Plug the cable into your phone and your computer
• On your phone it may ask you what kind of connection you’d like to make – choose Data or Storage
• Hopefully, your phone will appear as an external drive on your computer
• Copy the .jar to a place that looks right on your phone

Definitely one to check the manual. You may need software installed on your computer too.

This will work for all phones and if your user is remote from you. If your phone does not have an internet browser, it is likely that it cannot support openXdata mForms client. If you can’t access the web, you may need to set up your phone to do so – which is also necessary for getting the mobile client to work.

You need:

• Your project administrator, will need to put the mobile client in a publically accessible location

To install:

• On your phone’s web browser, go to the address you’ve been given for the jar – this can usually be the direct link to the jar e.g. http://www.openxdata.org/wp-content/uploads/openxdata-demo.jar
• The phone’s browser should prompt you to save it and optionally open it.

• Support for complex expressions – complicated skip logic and validation (currently requires a little tinkering on the server side, but you mobile users don’t need to worry about this)

Designer = A graphical interface that opens in a new window which allows you to design your form including adding and remove questions, defining skip logic, viewing & editing raw xml, and desiging a web form

Form = A set of Questions – the basic unit of data collection in openXdata

form_binding = A long string used to identify the form. Specific to each form version. Used as the name for the table export in database. Used in xml, including to form skip logic. The form_binding is defined the first time a form version is opened in the Designer the default is StudyName_FormName_FormVersion. It is better not to manually edit the form_binding

Form Version = Forms can have multiple versions, they are usually similar, involving just an upgrade to a subset of questions or the addition or removal of questions. They are unique and have their own database table in openXdata.

Published / Unpublished =
A published form is:

• Shown by default in the Dashboard view
• Downloaded to the mobile client if the user has permission for the Form or Study

An unpublished form is:

• Hidden by default in the Dashboard view – view unpublished forms it by selecting "Show all Versions" in the List of Forms box in the Dashboard
• NOT downloaded to the mobile client

Study = A group of Forms

Unpublished = see Published

Version = see Form Version

Go to your openXdata server address (from Installating openXdata on your server or desktop) e.g. http://localhost:8080/openxdata

By default the username and password to openXdata are admin / admin

Enter a new password for the admin user. If you do not you will continue to get warnings every time you log in to openXdata.

Later if you do not wish to use the default admin user, you can disable it. See section on managing users for further information.

The openXdata 1.8 Dashboard Home provides a homepage from which to completely manage your data collection, with all the regularly used features quickly accessible

If you want to:

• Import a specific form version – select any version of that form
• Import a specific form – select any row in the study
• Import a study - select any row
